Submission Guidelines

Want to submit something to us? Have a read below. I apologise in advance for the thorough inducement of boredom, but hopefully you'll stick with it!

Here at Bad Brains we want to encourage your participation as much as possible! So we've put together a list of the kind of things we're looking for, along with a few guidelines we need to impose for various reasons.

Please have a read through and if you'd still like to make a submission, please email us using the address given at the bottom of the page.

Things we're currently looking for

  • Gig reviews / stories / photos
  • Your answers for the From the Heart category
  • Fan art
  • SB related photos (you wearing merch, at gigs, with band members etc.)
  • Written pieces for the Recommended category

Guidelines

Photos and artwork

If you're submitting images, as a general rule please limit the amount to no more than 5, otherwise we may find ourselves swamped. If you really want to send more than this please email us and ask first.

Written work

Please do your best to use correct grammar and spelling, especially if you're submitting a full blown article (for the Recommended category for example). We completely understand if you struggle with this and appreciate that, for example, people with dyslexia will struggle more than most. However if you're able, just take some time to check it over before submitting. We're always willing to help edit, just realise that the more editing it needs, the longer it may take us to publish your submission.

From the Heart

For the From the Heart category the word limit is 400 (that's words, not characters). It can be less, that's fine, but the upper limit is in place to keep answers able to be quickly read and so that we're able to fit more submissions into each post.

Please also make sure you include the name you'd like your answer to be credited to. If you want to remain anonymous that's cool too, just state that in your email.

Word length

For submissions that are article length (gig reviews / recommended etc.), there's a suggested minimum of 800 words and an upper limit of 1000. Slightly over that (by slightly I mean say 1,100 and not 1,999!) is fine too.

If you really really need a lot more words than 1000, talk to us and we might make a rare exception.

For article submissions you can also include a link to your website and / or social media account, which will be listed alongside crediting your name at the bottom of a submitted post.

It goes without saying, but we're including this here just to make sure everyone understands. Everything you submit should be your own original work (that includes photos and artwork).

You will be given credit for your submission (along with a link to your website or social media profile if you provide us one). You retain full copyright, but in making a submission you also grant us full permission to publish it on the domain name badbrains.net.

When will your submission be published?

The short answer to that question is: it depends.

The long answer is, depending on what you've submitted and how many submissions we have at the time, it might take a while. There's currently just the two of us working on this in our spare time, so it's difficult to say.

If your submission falls into categories like From the Heart, where each post contains several answers grouped together, it might be a little while before you see your answer appear. Especially if we already have a big backlog to work through, as we'll be pacing those posts out rather than publishing several at a time.

All posts (apart from News) will have a rough schedule also, so that we have an even spread of subjects at all times. So even though you submitted an excellent gig review or recommendation, it still might be a while before we get around to publishing it, depending on when we last made a post of that type and also how many others have made submissions before you.

Phew, sorry for all that boring and dry information, but it's always good that everyone knows what's expected, and what our limitations are!

If you've read this far, thank you and well done! I think I even bored myself while writing that.

Anyway, if all of that still hasn't put you off, we'd love to hear from you!

Please send your submissions to contact@badbrains.net with "Submission" as the subject line.
