Song of the Week: Put Me Down as a Maybe

There's no 'maybe' about it- Put Me Down as a Maybe took this week's Song of the Week by a landslide!

Song of the Week: Put Me Down as a Maybe

Alright, you legends! We asked, you answered the call, and our first official Song of the Week (by popular vote, that is) goes to none other than Put Me Down as a Maybe!

As luck would have it, Zac just happened to post some behind the scenes footage from last year's Soul Boy IV tour featuring this song on Patreon the other day, so if you love this song as much as we do, go join up and check that out here.

You're going to get tired of hearing me say this, but I absolutely love this song. To be fair, I might be a bit biased since I love the entire Soul Boy II album so much I ordered a copy on vinyl just to mount it on my wall because I didn't have a record player at the time.

And we won't talk about the hundreds of Spotify codes some psychopath keeps leaving all over New England that point to Soul Boy II as well. I wouldn't know anything about that part since my lawyer says it's not funny to be morally ambiguous on the internet, but I do know that if you're trying to use the bathroom at Dave's Hot Chicken you don't have to do it in silence. That's a choice you make... Weirdo.

I finally have a record player, but now I don't want to take it out of the frame 😅

Put Me Down as a Maybe is a fierce track. Vocally, it's gritty and powerful, seamlessly blending rock and indie punk into a larger-than-life edge that's best viewed from a safe distance. The cheeky confidence of the lyrics and driving bassline are irresistible—if you listen to it once, you'll never stop listening to it again.

The searing guitar will leave you wondering if Zac really did manage to sell his soul at the crossroads to be able to play like that (he's neither confirmed nor denied), and I love the strobe effect the video has coupled with the shots of the crowd going absolutely wild. It's sassy, it's punchy... it's perfect.

The pulsating rhythm captures the feral energy one has come to expect from a Skinner Brothers show, puts it in a nice box with a pretty bow, and then shoves it right down your throat. It's the kind of crisp, dynamic song that demands to be played at full volume, inciting riots wherever you go with the tiniest hint of psychedelic swagger. This one is not for the faint of heart, and it certainly isn't one you want to sleep on either, folks.

I was going to leave this part out, but something is telling me not to, so I'd also like to give an honorable mention to Grok AI for comparing Put Me Down as a Maybe to the Stone Roses' song “Love Spreads.” I like to use Grok for song comparisons because I live under a rock and am therefore terrible at it myself. As a prime example, I had never heard of the Stone Roses before, and I don't know where Grok pulled that information from, but I checked out the song and it definitely tracks. Good job, robo-buddy!

As always, I'm suspicious of the accuracy of any lyrics I find on the internet, but here goes nothing:

Yeah I see you
Trippin' on my jericho star
I don't care who you are
Don't care who ya be
Keep living till ya phone go ring yo
Woah girl you're making me crazy
2 2's not a lot can phase me
Keep trippin' and the mind go daisy
So put me down as a maybe
Yeah I see 2
Blips on the beat radar
No space in my car
Fast jaguar - Johnny Marr
Keep living till ya phone go ring yo
Woah girl you're making me crazy
2 2's not a lot can phase me
Keep trippin' and the mind go daisy
So put me down as a maybe
When I say move
You choose it's the pits on the stars
Roll the dice - take a chance
Play the cards - ace of spades
Keep living till ya phone go ring yo
Woah girl you're making me crazy
2 2's not a lot can phase me
Keep trippin' and the mind go daisy
So put me down as a maybe
